Personal Health & Wellness

Wellness is the proactive part, the active pursuit of the lifestyle choices that build holistic health. Well-being is how it all feels. Both belong on the plan.

How often does a conversation start exactly like this?

"Hi Joe. It's been a while, how are you doing?"
"I've been well, thank you."

"Well" may be the most subjective word we use. Try to pin it down and it splits into two ideas that aren't the same thing at all:

  • Wellness is the proactive part, the active pursuit of the lifestyle choices that build holistic health: diet, movement, sleep, stress management, and more.
  • Well-being is how it feels, your overall life satisfaction and your own sense of your quality of life.

You're the sole judge of your own answer. And staying well enough to give a confident, wholehearted "Yes, I am WELL" can be close to a full-time job, especially across the years of Seniorhood. The good news: it's a job you don't have to do alone, and it breaks down into manageable parts.

The eight dimensions of wellness

Wellness experts organize that "full-time job" into dimensions, most commonly eight, though some frameworks stretch to twelve. At VyKare we use the core eight as a working checklist, so nothing that matters to your well-being slips through the cracks. They line up neatly under the three realms at the heart of everything we do.

Health

Health, body and mind

  • Physical

Staying strong, mobile, and energetic: movement, nutrition, good sleep, and catching the body's warning signs early.

  • Emotional

Understanding and managing your feelings: resilience, gratitude, humor, and accepting support when you need it.

Self

Self, purpose and connection

  • Social

Nurturing the relationships that sustain you, including the one or two true 'go-to' people every good retirement leans on.

  • Intellectual

Staying curious and mentally engaged: learning, hobbies, and creative challenges that keep the mind sharp.

  • Spiritual

Finding meaning and purpose, whatever its source, faith, values, ethics, or simple reflection.

  • Occupational (Purpose)

A reason to get up in the morning: a project, a cause, or volunteering that still puts what you're good at to use.

Wealth

Wealth, comfort and security

  • Financial

The peace of mind of resources that comfortably fund the life you want, the very heart of our Retirement Income work.

  • Environmental

Surroundings that support you: a safe, comfortable, manageable place to live as your needs evolve.

These eight are interconnected, a shift in one tends to ripple through the others, so the goal isn't a perfect score across the board. It's finding the balance that works for you.

Knowing the list is the easy part

Anyone can read a list of eight words. The real work, and where we come in, is honestly assessing where you stand on each one, deciding which to prioritize first, and assembling the right team of people to help you get there and stay there. That's what VyKare does: we build the gameplan and bring the right people to the table, so you can hold onto your well-being through all of Seniorhood.

It all connects

Your wellness picture doesn't sit off on its own, it shapes the rest of your plan. How healthy you are today influences everything from when it makes sense to retire to which insurance strategy fits you best. That's the whole idea behind taking an honest look at your Now before you build anything.

The first step is free
